An article by Thinktopia ceo Patrick Hanlon titled, “Forget Innovation, Who Is Your Chief Disruption Officer?” is featured in Ideas Lab, sponsored by GE. “It’s a terrific piece,” says Ideas Lab editor Brock Meeks.
The piece, which originally ran in Forbes magazine, highlights the differences between innovation (which tends to be product line extensions) and disruption, which can totally blindside a category or people. The automobile, for example, was disruptive to the horse and carriage trade which had existed in many innovative forms for thousands of years. It would have been foolish (before Henry Ford) to suggest that one day horses would no longer serve as transport.
As one observer noted, “Innovation seems like thinking, disruption sounds like doing!”
